The NEO protocol has two tokens: Gas (GAS) and NEO (NEO). GAS, in the context of NEO, is conceptually similar to the concept of gas in Ethereum; the unit of measurement for the computation of logic on the Blockchain. While the GAS token is the computational fuel used to execute smart contracts and pay for fees on the NEO protocol, the NEO token represents the right to manage and interact with the NEO network. GAS is created in every minted block and given to existing NEO token holders. The NEO protocol started with 100 million NEO tokens and 0 GAS, but eventually 100 million GAS will be created at a declining rate over the next 22 years.
